How to Export PST File

A PST file (filename extension - *.pst) is a ‘personal storage table’ file used by Microsoft Outlook to store your personal data such as emails, contacts and schedules. Outlook also provides the ability to export your PST file in case your original file gets corrupted and you need to restore it. You can export the PST file to another directory, to a USB device or to a CD-ROM.

In this article, we will discuss how to export a PST file. For this reason, the following steps need to be followed in order to properly export such a file to a new user defined file system path:

  • Open Outlook and go the ‘Import and Export’ option in the ‘File’ menu.
  • In the dialogue box that comes up, choose ‘Export to a File’.
  • In the next window that comes up, choose ‘Personal Folder File (.pst)’.
  • In the next dialogue box, choose the folders from your personal folder that you want to export. Generally you will want to export your whole personal folder. Keep the ‘Include subfolders’ checkbox ticked to make sure that everything gets exported.
  • In the next window, type in a filename for the exported file and choose its location by clicking on the ‘Browse’ button.
  • Now you are ready to export your PST file. You can re-import it later to restore your settings in case of a system crash.

Once these steps have been followed it is safe to say that the PST file has been exported to the new custom chosen path. Having this done, various operations such as backup, repair and custom fix routines according to various PST related problems can be applied on the original PST file without the risk of damaging your data since there will be always a copy exported for safety.

Just ensure you have saved your pst info to a safe location.  It is always better to make a copy of the file onto a different hard drive.  This ensures if your main drive dies you still have the backup.
