How to Import a PST File

A PST file (filename extension - *.pst) is a ‘personal storage table’ file used by Microsoft Outlook to store your personal data such as emails, contacts and schedules. Outlook also provides the ability to import a PST file from an external source such as a different drive, a USB drive or a CD-ROM. This is useful in case your original PST file gets corrupted somehow and you want to import the settings from a backed-up file. We will discuss the steps needed to import a PST file in such a manner in this article.

  • First go to the ‘File’ Menu in Microsoft Outlook and select ‘Import and Export’.
  • In the dialog box that comes up, choose ‘Import from another program or file’.
  • In the window that comes up, choose ‘Personal Folder File (.pst)’.
  • In the next window, browse for the backup file you want and import it.
  • Now all the settings contained in the PST file that you imported will be applied to Outlook.

PST file export and import routines are some of the common procedures done while working to fix certain problems related to the functionality of PST files. By following the above mentioned steps it is possible to properly import a PST file from an already exported equivalent one. In this way it is possible to properly work with PST files without risking any damage to the functionality and data that they contain since the end user will always have a safety PST file copy ready for import regardless of how problematic the original PST file seems to be.

It is important to remember that a good way of exporting and importing PST files is to name them using the date and time of their origin in order to have a complete control over what PST file is due to be imported at a certain moment according to the data that it contains.
