Outlook 2007 Slow

Some users of Microsoft Outlook 2007 have experienced the software to be extremely slow. There is no discernable reason for this. However, it is guessed to be caused by one of a number of reasons. A set of solutions have been proposed to alleviate the problem of Microsoft Outlook 2007 being slow:

ALWAYS Make a backup of the PST file first. Read our How to Backup Outlook pst files guide.

  • Download and install the Outlook Performance Update provided by Microsoft.
  • Rename or delete outcmd.dat, extend.dat, views.dat and frmcache.dat. Outlook will automatically recreate new files.

The locations of these files are as follows:
outcmd.dat:

  • Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

  • Windows Vista/ Windows 7:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

extend.dat:

  • Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

  • Windows Vista/Windows 7:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

views.dat:

  • Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\ Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

  • Windows Vista/Windows 7:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

frmcache.dat:

  • Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

  • Windows Vista/Windows 7:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FORMS

  • Create a new PST. A PST file (filename extenstion - *.pst) is a ‘personal storage table’ file used by Microsoft Outlook to store your personal data such as emails, contacts and schedules. There are separate personal folders in Outlook for your mail history, contacts, etc. Although the Outlook 2007 PST is essentially identical to the PST format new to Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007 writes additional data to the PST. If this fixes the problem, import or move your items from your old PST to the new one.
  • Create a new profile in Outlook. Do not delete the old profile until you make sure that Outlook works faster with the new profile. If this fixes the problem, you can delete the old profile.
  • Disable Outlook Setup Add-in (Instant Office add-in by Cyberlink) on Dell computers that have “Media Direct” installed. This add-in is used to convert meeting requests to recurring meetings and it also creates calendar and contact folders when attachments are saved.

For this purpose it is recommended to navigate to Tools, Trust Center, Addins and locate the add-in. At the bottom of the screen, select Manage: COM add-ins and click “Go”. Remove the checkmark from the Cyberlink add-in and close the dialog.

  • Uninstall Business Contact Manager.

Business Contact Manager has also been known to slow Microsoft Outlook 2007 down. For this reason, uninstalling it may result in an increased performance level of the Microsoft product.

You may also find that if you have a very large pst file file ( Over lets say 2G's) You may want to archive anything over 6 months old and delete all the junk mail. Keeping the file smaller will help to boost speed.

If for some reason these solutions do not work for you, you should contact a software technician who will be able to fix your installation of Microsoft Outlook 2007 for you since the problem may be related to some more complex situation that is outside of the scope of this article.
